A wart, or verruca, is a growth of skin. The roughened surface of a wart often looks like a tiny cauliflower , the underside of a wart is smooth and round, and the entire wart is confined to the epidermis -- the outermost layer of the skin.  The common wart, Verruca vulgaris, typically occurs on the hands. Flat warts, V. plana, typically occur on the face. And the plantar wart, or V. plantaris (which derives its name from the plantar muscles of the foot), typically occurs on the soles of the feet. The genital (venereal) wart, Condyloma acuminatum, occurs on the genitals or in the perianal region.

All warts are evidence of the skin’s reaction to one of more than seventy-five strains of a DNA virus called human papillomavirus, or HPV. HPV infection causes the cells of the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, to proliferate. They are contagious, and they are spread when the virus touches a part of the skin where the outer protective layer is broken, either by minor trauma or by moisture.

Types of Warts

There are four common kinds of warts Common warts, Foot warts, Flat warts, Genital warts.

Common warts (verrucae vulgaris), which almost everyone gets, are firm growths that usually have a rough surface. They are round or irregularly shaped; are gray, yellow, or brown; and are usually less than 1/2 inch across. Generally, they appear on areas that are frequently injured, such as the knees, face, fingers, and around the nails (periungual warts). Common warts may spread to surrounding skin.

Foot warts or Plantar warts develop on the sole of the foot, where they are usually flattened by the pressure of walking and are surrounded by thickened skin. They tend to be hard and flat, with a rough surface and well-defined boundaries. Warts may appear on the top of the foot or on the toes, where they are usually raised and fleshier. Warts are often gray or brown and have a small black center. Unlike corns and calluses, plantar warts tend to bleed from many tiny spots, like pinpoints, when a doctor shaves or cuts the surface away with a knife.

Filiform warts are long, narrow, small growths that usually appear on the eyelids, face, neck, or lips. Flat warts, which are more common in children and young adults, usually appear in groups as smooth yellow-brown, pink, or flesh-colored spots, most frequently on the face and tops of the hands. The beard area in men and the legs in women are also common locations for flat warts, where they may be spread by shaving.

Flat warts or juvenile warts: are smaller and smoother than other warts, and has the size of a pinhead; they may be pink, light brown, or yellow. They tend to grow in great numbers - 20 to 100 at any one time. They can occur anywhere, but in children they are most common on the face. In adults they are often found in the beard area in men and on the legs in women. Irritation from shaving probably accounts for this.

Genital warts (also called condyloma): are one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted infection. Its appearance is soft, not rough, moist, flesh colored and scaly. They sometimes appear in clusters that resemble cauliflower-like bumps, and can be raised or flat, small or large. The HPVs that cause genital warts rarely cause warts of the hands or feet. Genital warts have been linked to cancer of the genital area.
